Ken recommends...

Ruben Blades CD cover
Ruben Blades y Son del Solar...Live!

Ken says: "I've been a fan of Ruben Blades for years. If you like Salsa, Ruben Blades always brings together the best Salsa musicians around and his musical arrangements are sharp, clever, and intelligent (Blades is a Harvard graduate). I just love his stuff because the drumming is always first-rate."

Ken's says: "The Schwantner concerto is a terrific piece full of driving rhythms and new age melodies. Evelyn Glennie's improvised cadenza in the 3rd movement is exciting stuff."

Ken Yoshida has been Principal Percussionist for the Omaha Symphony since 1989. A native of San Francisco, Ken studied percussion at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and later at the Cleveland Institute of Music. His teachers include Tom Hemphill, Richard Weiner, and Charles Owen. Orchestral experience includes the Cleveland Orchestra and the Mexico City Philharmonic. The list of conductors he has worked under include Lorin Maazel, Leonard Slatkin, Eduardo Mata, and Jeorge Mester.

In 1993 and again in 2000, Ken served on negotiating committees representing the musicians of the Omaha Symphony and Local 70-558 of the American Federation of Musicians in labor contract negotiations.

Ken is the father of two children; Juliet who is a music major at Vanderbilt University and Noah, age 11. He is married to pianist Teri Heil who maintains a busy and successful teaching studio in Omaha.
